There has been some suggestion that rotator interval release can reduce shoulder stiffness and pain in patients recovering from arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. However, much of the evidence is anecdotal and of low quality, and a randomized trial was required to fully elucidate its benefits, or lack thereof.
In this randomized trial, 83 patients scheduled for an arthroscopic rotator cuff repair were randomized to receive an arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with or without a rotator interval release. The primary outcome of interest was pain, with secondary outcomes including a range of functional outcomes and narcotic consumption measures.
-
At no point during post-operative follow-up (from 1 hour to 24 months post-operation) did pain scores differ between the two groups.
-
Similarly no significant differences in function, complications or narcotic consumption were observed between the two groups.
Bottom line. The results of this randomized trial suggest that conducting a rotator interval release in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair provides no clinical advantages over not performing it.

NHS operations are facing disruption due to a global shortage of bone cement. Bosses said Heraeus Medical, its supplier, had suffered a packaging fault involving its bone cement products.
The health service, which is seeking alternative suppliers, said the issue had halted production at Heraeus' main site for at least two months.
It estimates it has two weeks' worth of supplies left, therefore leaving a supply gap of six to eight weeks, and urged trusts to review and prioritise waiting lists to maximise use of available stock.
